Drive
Stylish, high octane fare that shows the neon-lit highways and thoroughfares of LA for the sleazy snake trails that they are. Beginning at speed Drive shifts through the gears taking the viewer up and down the emotional scale. Touchingly comedic in its slower moments the films touches nail biting tension and look away violence. The rough stuff ventures close to the limit and some of the villainy is pedestrian but Drive remains a high speed ride that delivers in stylishly speedy fashion. The main quibble is the lack of drive – you can count the quality car chases on a five speed gear box. Ryan Gosling’s expression rarely journeys from a laconic smirk but he still manages to have the viewer in his corner as he drives around, across and through the LA underworld.
